Social Justice and AccountabilityClass of 2023, Phase 1, 5740 - Community Engagement I, Concepts of Health & It’s Determinants 1.5Aim:  The World Health Organization (1995) has defined social accountability for medical schools as "the obligation to direct their education, research and service activities towards addressing the priority health concerns of the community, region, and/or nation they have a mandate to serve”.  At the same time, medical professionals have an important role in promoting health equity and meeting the needs of the underserved.  In other words, the most vulnerable and marginalized people in our communities must become a priority in a system that builds health equity. As part of a health justice perspective, this class will address the need to understand how social determinants of health contribute to health care inequity, which, in turn, creates greater economic and educational disadvantage, stigma and social inequality.  Social accountability means that as practitioners we should provide and advocate for all members of the community, even those with the most challenging and complex problems.
