Aboriginal Health: Introduction | Class of 2017, Phase 1, 5740 - Community Engagement I, Population Health 1 | 1 | When health equity is achieved, every member of the population has equal opportunity to develop and to enjoy health. Health inequities exist both in Canada and globally with Indigenous (or Aboriginal) populations having significantly lower than average health status. Clashes in culture give rise to misunderstandings between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal groups. Physicians must be aware of this. They should also understand that as health care professionals social and cultural differences can enter into their encounters with First Nations/Inuit/ Métis (FN/I/M) People that can have a less-than-positive impact on the quality of care their patients receive. |
