Professionalism in Academic Practice

"Thriving learners and graduates" is an essential pillar of the Faculty of Medicine’s strategic plan “Destination Excellence”. For graduate students, this requires feeling connected and supported in a safe and professional learning environment in order to achieve their full potential in their coursework, their research and their professional development activities. This online learning module is designed to support graduate students and supervising faculty members in the Faculty of Medicine and will present the core expectations of professional conduct that arise for graduate students and supervisors.

After completing this online learning module, you will be able to:

  1. Define the concept of professional conduct as it pertains to graduate students and their supervisors in an academic learning environment
  2. Recognize professional and unprofessional behaviours and attitudes
  3. Describe the impact of student supervisor relationship on professional behaviour
  4. Identify the policies and procedures governing professional behaviour in an academic learning environment.
  5. Discuss how to respond to unprofessional behaviours and attitudes.

Clinical Trials

In this online course, you will learn about interventional studies, their benefits and challenges. This course will assist you in connecting theory to practice. Through experiential assignments and hands-on projects, you will have opportunities to apply interventional studies procedures.

After completing this online learning module, you will be able to:

  • Describe the main design features of Randomized Control Trials (RCT)
    • Differentiate between observational and interventional studies
    • List the components of randomized controlled trials
    • Explain ethical considerations for randomized controlled trials
  • Recognise principles of RCT study design and evaluation
    • List the requirements for randomization and blinding
    • Distinguish the phases of randomized controlled trials
  • Apply principles of statistical analysis for clinical trials
    • Differentiate between intention to treat and pre-protocol designs.
    • List some examples of RCT structural designs
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of good clinical trial practice
    • Explain ethical considerations for randomized controlled trials
    • Describe the components of a randomized controlled trial protocol
    • Recognize guidelines and standards for conducting and writing reports of randomized controlled trials

Quantitative Research

This online module is designed to support participant skills enhancement in planning, undertaking and disseminating scholarly work in medical education focused on quantitative research.

Learning Objectives
After completing this online learning module, you will be able to:

  1. Describe quantitative research methods in medical education.
  2. Identify quantitative research study designs in medical education.
  3. Discuss key factors associated with quantitative studies in medical education:
    1. Sample and sample size

Qualitative Research

Qualitative research is the study of social, relational, and experiential phenomena in their natural setting. It is exploratory research, intended to achieve a deep understanding of a situation from the perspective of participants. It is also inductive, or “ground up” research, in which insights emerge from the data.

Learning Objectives
After completing this online learning module, you will be able to:

  • Describe the logistics involved in running a qualitative project
  • Identify which qualitative methodology you can use for your research project.
  • Discuss data collection methods that best help answer your proposed qualitative research question(s).
  • Describe how you would conduct data analysis for your proposed research.
  • Summarize how you would ensure the trustworthiness of your proposed research.

Research Ethics

Research, by its nature, attempts to develop an understanding of the unknown. This goal of exploring the unknown can sometimes mean that there are risks to participants in research studies. At the same time, participating in research can also benefit participants - either directly or because they are contributing to the overall expansion of knowledge.

This online module will examine the importance of ethics in medical research and discuss how to ensure your medical research project meets defined ethical standards.

Learning Objectives
After completion of this module, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the role and importance of ethical principles in relation to clinical research.
  • Identify potential ethical nuances pertaining to a research study and consider how to best address them.
  • Describe the importance of integrity in clinical research and outcome, and its role and manifestation into clinical practice.
