Learning Objectives
Blueprint ID Learning Objectives

Describe the diagnostic work-up and sequence. (a) Discuss importance of the patient’s history—estimated duration of illness, nipple discharge, breast cancer risk factor assessment. (b) Identify physical findings to look for. (c) Discuss in-office procedures for evaluation and treatment (FNAC, needle aspiration, incision and drainage, core needle biopsy) and their diagnostic/therapeutic implications. (d) Discuss the importance of breast imaging studies such as ultrasound and mammography.
Discuss the diagnosis and management of the patient with an abnormal mammogram (consider microcalcifications).
Explain the rationale for management with specific emphasis on the following: (a) clinical staging of breast cancer (b) various possible malignant, pre-malignant, and benign pathology results (including hormonal receptor analysis and tumour DNA analysis) (c) follow-up for a patient with a benign lesion (alterations in lifestyle, imaging studies, cancer risk) (d) role of incision and drainage and antibiotics in breast abscess treatment(e) current recommendations for screening mammography (f) therapeutic options for the patient with breast cancer (g) role of surgery/when to consult a surgeon for further diagnosis and treatment
Obtain a focused history and physical examination related to breast problems, including palpation of lymph node regions.
Identify location and character of nipple discharge.
Employ appropriate technique of needle aspiration, both for cyst and cytology.
Employ appropriate technique of incision and drainage.
Stress current recommendations for screening mammography.
Stress importance of self-examination.
