Learning Objectives
Blueprint ID Learning Objectives
Review the monoamine hypothesis of depression and how this relates to the proposed mechanism of action of antidepressants.
Review the dopamine dysregulation theory as it relates to the proposed etiology of symptoms of schizophrenia and the mechanism by which antipsychotics may treat symptoms and/or cause certain adverse effects.
Describe the basic pharmacologic profiles (including what neurotransmitters they affect, what reuptake pumps and/or enzymes they may interact with, and what receptors they may interact with either directly, or indirectly through the facilitation of neurotransmitters) of the seven main classes of antidepressants (i.e. TCAs, SSRIs, SNRIs, NDRIs, SARIs, MAOIs, and NaSSAs).
List the generic names of the more common antidepressants within each main class listed above (note: these can be found in the lecture handout).
Describe the basic pharmacologic profiles (including what neurotransmitters they affect and what receptors they may interact with either directly, or indirectly through the facilitation of neurotransmitters) of the three main classes of antipsychotics (i.e. First Generation antipsychotics-including low, moderate and high potency agents; Second Generation Antipsychotics, and the Third Generation Antipsychotic, aripiprazole).
Describe the potential effects that arise as a result of an antidepressant’s or antipsychotic’s pharmacological profile i.e. what happens as a consequence of the drug’s potential interactions (either directly or indirectly through the facilitation of neurotransmitters) with a number of serotonergic, dopaminergic, adrenergic, histaminic, and muscarinic receptors; as well as with reuptake pumps and/or enzymes.
Apply knowledge of an antidepressant’s or antipsychotic’s pharmacological profile to determine which agent might be best suited for an individual patient scenario.
Apply knowledge of an antidepressant’s or antipsychotic’s pharmacological profile to determine how to switch medications safely to avoid serious adverse drug reactions.
Apply knowledge of an antidepressant’s pharmacological profile to determine what combinations of these medications might be reasonable and which should be avoided.
