Session Title:
ANES: Integrated Anesthesia Rotation
Description:
These objectives will be covered by the clinical patient encounters and by online teaching modules. All objectives are based on the 13 AAMC Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) and linked with canMEDS objectives. Particular focus will be placed on the EPAs that have been highlighted for student assessment by the Discipline of Anesthesia.

10553 Perform a pre-operative anesthesia assessment, including: (a) Focused history and physical; (b) Review of patient chart and interpretation of relevant investigations
10554 Create a differential diagnosis for common intraoperative complications including: (a) Hypoxia; (b) Hyper/ hypotension; (c) Hypercarbia; (d) Tachycardia
10555 Discuss and write post-operative recovery room orders including: (a) Orders for pain control and prevention of nausea and vomiting; (b) Orders for DVT prophylaxis following regional anesthesia
10556 Utilize the electronic anesthetic record to document and retrieve patient information
10557 Organize information obtained through patient interview, clinical exam and review of investigations and present it to the preceptor in the setting of planning the anesthetic
10558 Be able to discuss an anesthetic plan in the context of the patient’s clinical status and proposed surgery
10559 Consider the clinical application of medical information on key topics including: (a) The physiology and management of pain; (b) Drug pharmacology; (c) Fluid and electrolyte balance; (d) Cardiorespiratory physiology
10560 Handover patient care to the nurse in the PORR
10561 Observe interaction of the OR team and team communication in routine and critical situations
10562 Participate as a member of the OR team appropriate to level of training
10563 Develop an approach to a patient requiring emergency airway management
10564 Participate in the care of patients requiring emergency surgery
10565 Observe real-time physiologic changes in anesthetized patients and recognize intraoperative complications requiring urgent management
10566 Witness / participate in consent for anesthesia and related invasive procedures
10567 Perform technical procedures including: (a) IV insertion and (preparation of an intravenous infusion); (b) Airway management: BMV and maintenance of a patent airway; (c) Venipuncture
10568 Understand and explain the anatomy, physiology, indications, risks, contraindications, benefits, alternatives, and potential complications of the procedures
10569 Appreciate the culture of patient safety practiced in the OR/ anesthesia setting in the context of: (a) Surgical Safety Checklist; (b) Anesthesia machine fail safes and alarms; (c) CAS patient monitoring standards
