(a) Discuss the relationship to solar irradiation, ethnicity, previous tissue injury, and immunosuppression. (b) Identify the characteristics of malignant skin lesions that distinguish them from benign lesions. (c) Describe the appropriate treatment of small and large basal and squamous cancers and their prognosis.
1246 Describe the characteristics, typical locations, etiology, and incidence of malignant melanoma. (a) Explain the relationship of melanoma to benign nevi and the characteristics which help differentiate them. (b) Discuss risk factors for melanoma, and identify the lesions which have high potential for malignant transformation. (c) Outline the various types of melanoma and the prognosis for each type. (d) Explain the relationship of size and thickness to prognosis.
1247 Apply the following techniques: (a) infiltration of local anesthetic and nerve blocks for cutaneous excision (b) incision and drainage (c) skin biopsy (punch and excisional)
1248 Stress the importance of sunscreens and other skin protection, particularly in fair-skinned individuals.
1249 Promote awareness of the importance of self-examination of skin lesions for suspicious changes.
1250 Remove congenital hairy nevi prior to adulthood.
