1144 Describe the expected outcome of an uncomplicated surgical procedure. Discuss a normal post-operative course for various common operations. Consider the following: (a) time to recover, order of recovery of digestive function (stomach, small bowel, colon, etc.) (b) characteristics of a healing surgical wound (c) impact of various incisions on recovery (d) functional abilities and disabilities, acutely and chronically (e) nutritional and fluid needs and options for replacement (f) prevention strategies for potential complications (g) patient support systems and options for post-hospital care
1145 Demonstrate the ability to compose post-operative orders and post-operative notes.
1146 Obtain a focused history and physical examination that addresses post-operative care.
1147 After exposure to a variety of bedside procedures, relate the indications, contraindications, and complications of various techniques. (a) Demonstrate sterile technique. (b) Assess a post-operative wound and change a surgical dressing. (c) Perform simple suturing; remove sutures and staples. (d) Insert a peripheral IV and obtain a venous blood sample. (e) Place a NG drain. (f) Place a Foley catheter in males/females. (g) Remove a drain.
1148 Perform basic record keeping on a surgical service. Consider common surgical procedures, such as a laparoscopic cholecystectomy, colon resection, AAA resection, and include the following: (a) pre- and post-operative orders (b) operative note (c) daily progress note (d) discharge instructions
1149 Calculate the nutritional needs, and describe preferred routes of administration of nutritional therapy for patients with various surgical problems.
1150 Explain what is meant by the term prophylaxis, and discuss its rationale in preventing infectious and pulmonary complications.
1151 Discuss alternatives, including their appropriate uses and risks, for prophylaxis of DVT and PE.
1152 Outline the indications for antibiotic prophylaxis; include commonly used agents, timing, and duration of prophylaxis. Consider alternatives in patients with known drug allergies.
1153 Explain the rationale for bowel preps in patients undergoing various abdominal surgeries.
1154 Describe modification in diet, chronic medications, behaviour (smoking, alcohol) that might be indicated in patients undergoing major surgery.
