Learning Objectives
Blueprint ID Learning Objectives
Distinguish short chain, medium chain, long chain, and very long chain fatty acids and describe the systems for naming fatty acids and double bond positions.
Define and distinguish straight chain and branched chain fatty acids.
Identify the main long chain fatty acids and indicate which of these are described as "essential" and why.
Describe the main classes of lipids
Outline the digestion of lipids along the GI tract and indicate the role of the pancreas and gallbladder in this process.
Describe functions of the following in lipid disgestion: cholesterol esterase; pancreatic lipase and co-lipase; phospholipases; and bile salts.
List the main types of lipid absorbed into intestinal cells.
Identify potential causes and pathological consequences of a deficiency of each of the following fat soluble vitamins: Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin K.
Outline the processes for production and metabolism of chylomicrons and indicate the relationship of this to blood triglyceride levels.
