Family Medicine Lecture Series - April 2026

Description

The Family Medicine Lecture Series is delivered in partnership between the Long Range, Shalloway, RE-Boot and Endeavor Family Practice Networks (FPNs), the Family Practice Renewal Program (FPRP), NL Health Services, and the Office of Professional and Education Development (OPED) and Distributed Medical Education (DME), both with the Faculty of Medicine, Memorial University.

This weekly lecture series on topics relevant to family medicine is based on a needs assessment conducted by the Office of Professional and Education Development (OPED), in consultation with the Family Practice Renewal Program, the Family Practice Networks, the NL College of Family Physicians, and the Newfoundland & Labrador Medical Association.

All program sessions will be conducted via Microsoft Teams. A link to access the sessions will be circulated before the scheduled meetings. To ensure a smooth experience, we recommend installing and testing Microsoft Teams in advance. You can download it here: Microsoft Teams Download.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Review the three main components of prenatal care: risk assessment, health promotion and education, and therapeutic intervention
  • Describe how to provide frailty-informed care
  • Recognize ageism in the health care setting
  • Recognize unmet care needs in their vulnerable older adult patients
  • Have a greater understanding of the various services available to older adults in the community
  • Connect older adults with the appropriate service so as to meet their care needs in the fastest and most effective way
  • Review the rationale for early initiation of prenatal care
  • Review indications for initiation of vaginal progesterone in early pregnancy
  • Outline the recommended routine prenatal screening tests and review timing and indications for key screening milestones
  • Discuss universal psychosocial screening
  • Identify indications for aspirin prophylaxis
  • Review vaccine recommendations in pregnancy
  • Describe the concept of frailty and how it informs care
  • Feel comfortable recognizing and diagnosing frailty in their own patients
