Family Medicine Lecture Series - April 2025

Description

The Family Medicine Lecture Series is delivered in partnership between the Long Range, Shalloway, RE-Boot and Endeavor Family Practice Networks (FPNs), the Family Practice Renewal Program (FPRP), NL Health Services, and the Office of Professional and Education Development (OPED) and Distributed Medical Education (DME), both with the Faculty of Medicine, Memorial University.

This weekly lecture series on topics relevant to family medicine is based on a needs assessment conducted by the Office of Professional and Education Development (OPED), in consultation with the Family Practice Renewal Program, the Family Practice Networks, the NL College of Family Physicians, and the Newfoundland & Labrador Medical Association.

  • Describe the impact of social prescribing, particularly arts-based interventions, on patient health and well-being
  • Identify and access social prescribing opportunities within the province, specifically those involving singing, to support patient engagement in these programs.

MRI Appropriateness in Musculoskeletal Imaging
Dr. Fraser Loveys and Dr. Daniel Duggan

Learning Objectives:
  • Differentiate between the appropriate indications for MRI, CT, ultrasound, and X-ray in the assessment of MSK and neuro conditions
  • Identify clinical scenarios where MRI is the preferred imaging modality for musculoskeletal (MSK) and neurological (neuro) concerns
  • Recognize the limitations of MRI and when alternative imaging modalities may be more appropriate or required
  • Apply evidence-based guidelines to optimize imaging referrals for MSK and neuro conditions, with a focus on appropriate use in Family Medicine
  • Discuss the impact of expanded Family Physician access to MRI on patient care and healthcare resource utilization

Sickle-Cell

  • Describe the management of common emergencies in sickle cell disease
  • Describe the surveillance for and management of common chronic complications of sickle cell disease
  • Outline the role of the comprehensive care clinic for sickle cell disease at the Janeway
  • Provide an overview of the diagnosis of sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait
