Timely access to accurate patient information can lead to better patient care and improved outcomes. HEALTheNL is the electronic health record (EHR) for Newfoundland and Labrador, connecting authorized health care providers to an array of provincial patient information that includes clinical documents, laboratory results, diagnostic imaging and related reports, pharmacy medication records and immunizations. Access to comprehensive patient information at point of care supports our health care providers in making informed decisions about the patients they treat. This presentation will provide a demonstration of HEALTHeNL and offer case examples of its use in clinical practice.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the clinical value of using HEALTheNL, the EHR, in clinical practice
  • Explain the necessary steps to implement HEALTHeNL in their clinical practice
  • Describe how to obtain patient information from the HEALTHeNL viewer to support evidence-based decision making
  • Discuss how the HEALTheNL viewer can be used in clinical practice to enhance patient and public safety

This continuing professional development (CPD) program has been designed to consider the CanMEDS Physician Competency Framework, including the roles of: Medical Expert, Communicator, Collaborator, Health Advocate, Manager, Scholar and Professional.
