Office of Professional and Educational Development

The scholarship program will involve a cohort of participants in an extended and formalized program of professional development focused on enhancing competencies in educational scholarship. The program is designed to support participants in enhancing their skills in planning and undertaking scholarly work in medical education.

Educational Scholarship
CAME Definition: An umbrella term which can encompass both research and innovation in health professions education.

AAMC Definition (2009): Educational Scholarship refers to any material, prod-uct or resource originally developed to fulfill a specific educational purpose that has been successfully peer-reviewed and is subsequently made public through appropriate dissemination for use by others.

This program consists of 5 seminars. Participants can complete individual seminars and receive 2 credit hours each. Participants who complete all 5 seminars will receive a Certificate of Participation.

Facilitators

Vernon Curran, BA, Dip.Ed., MEd., Post Grad.Cert.Ed., PhD.

Vernon Curran is Associate Dean of Educational Development, Professor of Medical Education and cross-appointed with the Faculty of Education at Memorial University. He is currently chair of the Certificate program in Medical Teaching offered through the Faculty of Medicine and co-chaired the Scholarship in Medical Education (SIME) program offered through the Canadian Association of Medical Education (CAME). He teaches in the areas of adult learning and development, teaching and learning in medical education, interprofessional education in the health professions, research in post-secondary education, organization and administration of adult education, and adult education methods. He has led a research program in medical education that has focused on e-learning, program evaluation and assessment, interprofessional education, simulation-based learning and continuing medical education.

Steve Shorlin, BSc (Hons), MSc, PhD.

Steve Shorlin is a teaching consultant with the Office of Professional and Educational Development. During his ten years with the Faculty of Medicine, his main responsibilities have been faculty development and resident educational development. He works closely with individual disciplines to deliver faculty development sessions, and coordinates sessions faculty wide. He also loves to teach and takes advantage of any opportunity to interact with students and residents on teaching and learning topics.

Nic Fairbridge, BSc (Hons), PhD.

Nic Fairbridge is a research associate with OPED, offering research consultation, analytic support and project management. Nic holds degrees in biology, fellowships in biochemistry and biomedicine, and professional experience in research ethics evaluation and management of community health research and outreach projects. With over 15 years’ experience in research design and evaluation, Nic brings a diverse base of skills in project management, analysis and evaluation, and research support to OPED’s projects.

Program Goals
Upon completion of the program, participants should be able to:

  • Foster educational innovation and effectiveness
  • Promote educational leadership

Registration
Open to all non-clinical and clinical faculty members, students, residents, and staff

Expectations

  • Participation in scheduled seminars
  • Complete all required activities
  • Participants will receive a Certificate of Participation upon completion of all seminars

Program Requirements

  • Medical Education Scholarship Seminars
    Minimum 5 seminars (2 hrs x 5 = 10 hrs total) addressing specific educational scholarship competencies.

Accreditation
This Group Learning program meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been certified by the Office of Professional Development, Memorial University of Newfoundland for up to 10 Mainpro+ credits.

This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by the Office of Professional Development, Memorial University of Newfoundland. Up to 10 section 1 credit hours can be claimed.
