DEFINITION OF A PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND

Admission preference is given to Canadian Citizens or Canadian Permanent Residents who the Prince Edward Island Government determines are residents of Prince Edward Island at the time of application.
The following criteria outlined by Prince Edward Island will be used to determine residence status, however, applicants who are living or have lived in Prince Edward Island and do not meet these criteria will be reviewed on an individual basis.

The residence information of all applicants who consider themselves Prince Edward Island residents at the time of application will be forwarded to Prince Edward Island for review and consideration.

The place of residence for students is normally presumed to be the province in which the home of the parent is located; individuals will be deemed residents of Prince Edward Island if they:
  • are currently residing or permanent address in the province and attended school for five years during intermediate to high school inclusive; or;
  • are currently working full-time in the province for three years continuously not attending a post-secondary educational institution; or
  • are currently residing or permanent address in the province for three years continuously because of family relocation, eg. of parent or spouse; or;
  • are currently residing or permanent address in the province for one year because of obtaining Canadian Permanent Resident Status.
Your residence status must be indicated at the time of application and you will be notified if the decision differs. Please note that these rules are constantly under review and may change from year to year.

All applicants are expected to claim the same place of residence on all applications to medical schools.
