Potential Residents Overview

Our residents have excellent access to the clinical teaching load and receive early hands-on experience to radiologic procedures.  The average patient load depends on rotation. 
There is a wide variety, with absolutely no shortage of cases.  There are three mandatory out of town rotations.  The first one is in the PGY-1 year, Rural Obstetrics, done in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland, which is approximately a 5-hour drive from St. John's.  The Postgraduate Medical Studies office will reimburse for travel expenses for this rotation. 
The second rotation is a 4 week course at the American Institute of Radiologic Pathology (AIRP) located in Silver Springs, Maryland, USA, during the PGY-4 year.  Each resident receives partial funding towards this course.  The third out of town rotation is a rural radiology rotation which takes place at Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook, NL, and again takes place during the residents' PGY4 year.  Again, travel expenses for this rotation are reimburses to the resident.

Resident evaluations are done on a regular basis throughout the year consisting of a yearly ACR examination; two OSCEs; and twice yearly formal oral examination done in the same format as the Royal College examination. 
In addition residents are required to do an end of rotation examination following each monthly/bimonthly rotation.  In addition, PGY5 residents are given individual mock oral exams to help prepare for the Royal College exams.  
Our residents experience early hands-on radiology with close one-on-one supervision.  Residents who are prepared to work hard will benefit significantly from this program. 
Our former residents are now practicing in every region of the country.  Our program is a relatively small one allowing for a friendly atmosphere among faculty, staff and residents.  Our program is a very strong program with a good balance of academic pursuit and social activities. We believe we offer an excellent residency training program in diagnostic radiology.
