Human Genetics Graduate Student Research Forum 2015
September 3, 2015
The Discipline of Genetics graduate program had its 4th research forum on June 23rd, 2015. It was our first forum held in our new facilities, The Craig L. Dobbin Genetics Research Centre.

We had a very successful program of talks by our MSc and PhD candidates. The topics ranged from whole exome analyses of Newfoundland & Labrador families with rare conditions, to identification of copy number variants in colorectal cancer patients in Newfoundland & Labrador, to the development of a mutation panel for Stargardt disorder in the NL population.

Two additional graduate students, from outside the program, also provided very interesting sessions based on their research.  We would like to specifically thank Kerri Smith and Hayley Alloway for participating and providing much food for thought.

During each forum, the faculty evaluate the students and determine the best overall talk in the MSc category and the PhD category.
This year the winner’s of the cash prizes were Cindy Penney, supervised by Dr. Terry-Lynn Young, for her MSc project “Investigations of the Genetic Cause of Hearing Loss in a Newfoundland Family”.  In the PhD category, Erfan Aref-Eshghi, won for his talk entitled “The Genetic Study of Osteoarthritis”. Erfan is supervised by Dr. Guangju Zhai, an Associate Professor in the Discipline of Genetics.
