Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology appointment for Dr. Sevtap Savas
January 25, 2022
Dr. Sevtap Savas, PhD., a cancer scientist and professor at the Division of Biomedical Sciences, has been appointed as the Chair of the Advocacy Committee of the Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology (CAPO), a national organization with a mandate to “improve the capacity and excellence in psychosocial oncology services in Canada and beyond” through research, education, collaboration, and clinical practice.
The CAPO Advocacy Committee advocates for cancer patients and psychosocial care in oncology. The committee also works to increase access to the psychosocial support and clinical services needed by cancer patients and families during their cancer journey. The development of a national framework for advocacy in support of psychosocial services is one of the important ongoing projects of the Advocacy Committee.

“Cancer can be quite a tough disease to deal with, both for the patients and their loved ones," Dr. Savas said. "Psychosocial care programs, such as oncology social work and psychological support programs that are designed to reduce the effects of cancer as well as the changes and challenges it brings to the individuals’ lives, are essential for patient and family wellness and recovery."

Dr. Savas was appointed to a one-year term as committee chair this fall. The committee's efforts will benefit cancer patients and families across the country, she said, including in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"I am thrilled to be offered this exciting position, take on some of the current challenges in psychosocial oncology, and lead the efforts of this dedicated committee," she said.
