Island to Island: International Education brings Faculty of Medicine to Caribbean Medical School

Dr. Vernon Curran, associate dean, educational development, recently provided the Faculty of Medicine’s Certificate in Medical Teaching program  to a cohort of faculty of the Xavier University School of Medicine located in Oranjestad, Aruba.
 

The Certificate in Medical Teaching is a 10 month program offered through the Office of Professional and Education Development (OPED) that provides a broad, introductory coverage of evidence-based principles and concepts which underpin effective teaching and learning practices in medical education.  Learning methods, activities and resources encourage participants to approach their learning through a critical, reflective and evidence-based perspective.  

Dr. Curran offered the program by distance learning with the latest technologies in real-time and asynchronous online learning.  He visited the campus on November 22nd to present the certificate to Xavier University faculty members.

The mission of Xavier University School of Medicine is to prepare physicians to practice compassionate primary care medicine of the highest standard.  Xavier University School of Medicine is one of only a small number of Caribbean medical schools to have achieved full accreditation by the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP) and the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM).  Both the CAAM-HP and the ACCM use guidelines set forth by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).

The certificate has been offered in both on-campus and distance learning formats for over a decade to medical educators from Newfoundland Labrador, across Canada and the United States, and now on an international level.
