August 30, 2022
Dr. Sevtap Savas, a professor of genetics and oncology at the Faculty of Medicine, has been appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of CAPO (Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology).
CAPO is a national organization that promotes excellence in the psychosocial care many cancer patients and family members need and benefit from. This has been the main reason that Dr. Savas is attracted to this organization. CAPO's board is comprised of 15 directors with diverse expertise, including patient and family representatives.

"I am happy to contribute to CAPO’s various activities and committees. CAPO and I have common goals," Dr. Savas says, pointing to the importance of effective social and psychological support for cancer patients and families in order to adapt to changes in their lives, handle the many effects of the disease and its treatments, and enhance their recovery and survivorship.

Dr. Savas, who is cross-appointed to the Discipline of Oncology, is proud to represent Newfoundland and Labrador on the CAPO board. Over time, she hopes to form a strong bridge between CAPO and the province.

"Overall, psychosocial care and support reduce the impact of cancer on individuals and families," Dr. Savas says. "This is one of my key goals, personally and professionally. I sincerely believe that every effort and minute I spend on CAPO’s mission will help support individuals affected by cancer."
