News at Medicine - August 2016 - Dean's Notes

Dean's Notes
August 29, 2016
During my second week, I attended the Memorial University faculty and staff orientation along with three of our new faculty members. This was a great opportunity to learn about the various services at Memorial and to connect with others from across campus. I’m also learning about Memorial’s great sense of community.

Every day I am meeting more and more people and learning more about the Faculty of Medicine. During my second week, I attended the Memorial University faculty and staff orientation along with three of our new faculty members. This was a great opportunity to learn about the various services at Memorial and to connect with others from across campus.

I’m also learning about Memorial’s great sense of community. I served at the Memorial annual employee appreciation barbecue which is a great opportunity to further develop the campus community, bringing staff and faculty from across campus to raise money and provide donations to the food bank. If you haven’t attended this event before, I would highly recommend it.

It’s been very busy all around campus. We are getting ready to welcome new and returning students for another semester as 80 first year medical students started their busy week of orientation. In fact, planning is well underway for the White Coat Ceremony for first year students and I was quite impressed with how engaged the second year medical students as co-chairs and the enthusiasm of the Student Affairs team when I attended the meeting.

During the past week, I toured the Health Sciences Centre including laboratories in the Division of Biomedical Sciences and the Division of Community Health and Humanities. I continue to learn about the interesting achievements of the faculty and staff; for example, I learned that we have four bioethicists which is proportionately much higher than other academic institutions in Canada. I’m looking forward to getting to know more about our many disciplines and the people who make them extraordinary.

We are in the process of establishing a Celebration Committee to mark the 50th anniversary of the Faculty of Medicine, the 40th anniversary of telemedicine and the graduation of the first cohort of 80 undergraduate medical students in 2017. Next year will be a time to reflect on our history, the outstanding achievements of our faculty and staff in education and research as well as those of our medical students and graduate students, and the changes and growth that have occurred in the past 50 years. Faculty, staff, alumni and the community will be invited to celebrate with us and we will keep you informed of the planning process.

Finally, I was very honoured to be invited to the President’s luncheon for my predecessor, Dr. James Rourke where his contributions to the Faculty of Medicine and to Memorial University were recognized. It was attended by Dr. Leslie Rourke, senior leaders from Memorial and individuals, staff and faculty from the Faculty of Medicine. I feel very fortunate to be inheriting a faculty with so many accolades and such a wonderful reputation.

Feel free, as many already have, to pop into my office and introduce yourself if we haven’t met. Until then, have a great week.

Margaret Steele
