After 20 years in practice in St. John's as a specialist in internal medicine and heart disease, Dr. Graham Young has decided to move to Gander.
"Gander is a very progressive place right now, and it's where I want to be," he said just prior to his Feb. 1 move. "I like the area, and it suits me from a recreational point of view."
Dr. Young's choice to move away from St. John's will benefit the medical school by providing teaching expertise for residents in a more rural location. "The Royal College wants residents to have more rural-based training, and I'll be able to continue teaching from my new location."
Over the years, Dr. Young has been involved in teaching medical students and residents at all levels, and for several years he served as the clinical clerk co-ordinator. He is pleased that he will be able to continue his involvement with the medical school from a new location.
"I don't think you can teach attitudes to rural medicine unless you've been there, or are there," he said. Dr. Young's own medical career, following his education at University College Dublin, started with two years in rural practice, one year in Placentia and one at Botwood. And his St. John's-based practice has included travelling to Gander once a month for the last 15 years.
"The hospital and the board in Gander are very progressive, and my recreational activities have always been oriented to the country. I'm quite excited about the move -- it's where I want to be."
