Bayer funding clinical health care research at Memorial

Three contracts between medical school faculty members and Bayer Inc. will bring about $750,000 to the province for medical research and development.

Dr. Calvin MacCallum will be the investigator in the ACTION study to study the effect of Adalat XL on major cardiovascular outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease. The value of the grant is $340,000.

Dr. Carol Joyce is the investigator in the STOP study, which looks at the impact of ACarbose on the subsequent development of diabetes in subjects with impaired glucose tolerance. The grant for this project is $200,000.

Dr. Bruce Sussex will receive $160,000 for a study on a new investigational drug in patients with congestive heart failure.

The research for these studies will take place at the Faculty of Medicine and the General Hospital. The provincial minister of industry, trade and technology, Charles Furey, said that this type of work makes a significant contribution to the provincial economy by creating well-paying jobs and utilizing the expertise and capabilities that exist in the province.

Memorial's vice-president of research, Dr. Kevin Keough, said the university is delighted to see Bayer's investment come to Memorial. "It is a gratifying endorsement of the quality ofÔh)0*0*0*°°Ô our health researchers."
