Dr. Yagang Xie
Assistant professor
Discipline of Laboratory Medicine
Dr. Yagang Xie's appointment fills a badly needed position at the Health Care
Corporation as director of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory. For the past two years,
little work has been done at the Janeway-based laboratory while the search went on for a
qualified director.
Dr. Xie brings an impressive background in clinical and research training to
this position. He obtained his MD in 1983 from Henan University of Medical Science in
Zhengzhou, China, and following a residency in internal medicine he worked as a research
associate in the Division of Medical Genetics at the Henan Institute of Family Planning.
In 1992 Dr. Xie earned a doctorate in medical science from the University of Zurich in
Switzerland, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at the Karolinska Institute in
Stockholm, Sweden. He then came to Canada as a post-doctoral fellow at the Centre for
Research in Neuroscience at McGill University. He finished two years CCMG (Canadian
College of Medical Genetics) training at Queen's University.
Dr. Xie says his combined education and experience in clinical medicine and basic
science enables him to follow new developments in genetics and assess whether they will be
transferred to clinical practice. He says Newfoundland is a wonderful place to do medical
genetics, and he likes the challenge of developing a laboratory almost from the beginning.
According to the specific demand in Newfoundland, Dr. Xie has drawn up a plan for the
initial development of molecular testing for certain hereditary cancer and mendelian
diseases, which include colon cancer, breast cancer, multiple endocrine neoplasia type I
and type II, Fragile X, Huntington's disease, spinocerebellar ataxia and cystic fibrosis.
