Student affairs officer wins President's Award's awardVera Griffin received the President's Award for Exemplary Service this fall in recognition of her work for the Faculty of Medicine over the last 24 years. As officer for Student Affairs, Vera deals with medical students on a daily basis and is always willing to lend a sympathetic ear and help solve problems.
"I don't always have the answers, but sometimes just listening can help," she said, noting that she has become more aware of cultural issues in the last few years as American and Malaysian students have begun to study medicine at Memorial. Vera began working in the medical school in 1974, and was appointed officer for student affairs in 1983. She grew up in Windsor, and always wanted to earn a university degree. So along with her busy job, she managed to fulfil that dream and received a degree in vocational education in 1994. As for receiving the President's Award, the most important thing to Vera is that the medical students thought enough of her to put her name up for nomination.
