Of note

Dr. Robert Walley, obstetrics and gynecology, has received the Award of Honour to a Person of Science and Faith from the International Federation of Catholic Medical Association. It was presented at the 19th World Congress of the organization in September. Dr. Walley received this award for his outstanding work in West Africa where since 1981 her has been developing programs designed to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity, in particular obstetric fistula. He directed a maternal health and obstetric fistula project in Nigeria from 1989-96 and is currently developing a second project in Ghana of prevention and a treatment, rehabilitation and training centre for obstetric fistula.

Dr. Roy West, associate dean of community health, was elected vice-president of the National Cancer Institute of Canada in June. The NCIC is the research arm of the Canadian Cancer Society, and it distributes about $40 million annually for research. As vice-president, Dr. West serves as NCIC's committee on priorities and planning. He is also one of two NCIC representatives on the board of the Canadian Cancer Society.
