Obituary

Dr. Peter Nathaniel Grant

pgrant.jpg (7617 bytes)Dr. Peter Nathaniel Grant (Class of 1994) died Aug. 5 at Ottawa General Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 3, 1967, and raised in the Fredericton area. He received his early education in Fredericton schools, receiving his bachelor of science degree from the University of New Brunswick. He graduated from Memorial with his MD in 1994, and followed with postgraduate training in family medicine, obtaining his CCFP. He practised briefly in Newfoundland.

Dr. Grant is survived by his wife, Cliona McManamon, and parents, Sydney and Christina Grant, his sister, Erin, brother, Shannon, grandmothers Amelia Grant and Agnes Wright, aunts Judith, Carol and Yvonne, and uncle Herbert. As well, he left an extended family of cousins and many friends across Canada, in the Fredericton area and in St. John's.

Dr. Grant was skilled in music, especially the guitar, was an avid carpenter and loved playing soccer. He was noted for his loyal friendships, extreme intelligence and fine wit. During a two-year siege with cancer, he was consistently brave.

Dr. Dave Healey, a close friend and ex-roomate, said this death is "a profound loss to those who had the privilege of knowing and loving Pete. He contributed so much in various ways to the Faculty of Medicine and to everyone that knew him. His death was a devastating loss to his wife, family and friends."

Members of the Department of Orthopedics at the University of Ottawa are listing their names with the national Bone Marrow Transplant Registry in honour of Dr. Grant and his battle with leukemia.
