LetterHi all, Sorry to have missed the reunion. It would have been good to see some of the old faces (presuming any of the oldies are left from 20+ years ago.) We've made the plunge and moved to New Zealand -- under the misguided delusion that we would enjoy the fruits of early retirement before we were too old to enjoy it. Sadly though -- between battling the traffic and guarding against an endemic crime wave, it's not quite what we (relatively) country bumpkins bargained for. New Zealand continues with its social experiments. Health care is in constant turmoil. Patients aren't sure what services will be available (or how many years they may have to wait to get them) and health care workers at all levels have no sense of security as political policies swing from favouring the private sector to the public sector and back again. I'm not studying for a second speciality -- and sometimes wonder (sacrilegious thought) whether it wouldn't be better to opt out of medicine altogether and do something as far removed as possible from the vagaries of political whims. We don't miss the blizzards, freezing winds and black ice (fern palms, winter roses, hibiscus and bourgainvillea are very tolerable winter treats) but we sure miss friends and family and the smell and feel of real Newfie fog, white Christmases and central heating. Wishing you all the best. Debbie (Ryan)-Sheridan Class of 1976 transpac@ihug.co.nz |
