If you are a Canadian medical student who will graduate by 2012 and your medical school has agreed to take part in this nationwide study, you can obtain your complete 4-letter personality type and 10-page Temperament Report *FREE OF CHARGE*. This opportunity has been made available through an AdvisorTeam.com Research Grant. Please email Dr. June Harris for your access code and private entrance page. By taking part in this survey, you can contribute to the collection of Canadian data on personality type and specialty choice.
Once you receive your type, you can go to the AAMC Careers in Medicine site at http://www.aamc.org/students/cim/ (an administrator at your school can provide your password), enter your type and see to which specialties you may best be suited (according to American data). Canadian data will not be available until the completion of this study.
What is personality type?
One
way to define personality is to think in terms of who you are and how you relate
to others. Another way is to assess your preferences in relationships,
activities, organizational style, gathering and interpreting information,
learning styles, and relating to the world at large.
Why assess personality?
Who
you are and how you relate to others are important in everyday life. Your
particular style of interaction with patients, colleagues, and supervisors is an
especially significant element in choosing a specialty. For instance, if you
prefer quiet and solitude to bustling activity, you will probably find radiology
preferable to emergency medicine as a choice of specialty.
The Keirsey
Temperament Sorter II
The
online interactive version of this assessment instrument uses many of the same
elements of personality assessment as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, which is
one of the most commonly used and widely respected personality/temperament
assessment tools available. Please go to
http://www.keirsey.com/siteexplain.html for a thorough description of the tools.

There will be a presentation entitled: Personality Type & Medical Specialties "PowerPoint" to first and second year students each year. For the past several years this has been done by Ada Shave (B.Ed., M.Ed.Psych) who is a consultant, professional development instructor, and facilitator. Ada works extensively in the area of career development and uses personality typing as a tool to help clients understand the role of personality in career choice. Personality Type & Medical Specialties "video" will be presented as one method of helping them determine the specialty to which students may best be suited. A Specialty Profiles Workbook is available in the Student Affairs office or from Dr. June Harris in room H1833.
This video presentation does not include Ob/Gyn. The intention is to see if you can figure out which types would best "fit" with this specialty.
Disclaimer:
The Personality Type and Medical Specialty video is a recording of a seminar conducted in April 2005. The expressed relationships to specialty choice are solely the opinion of the speaker. This presentation attempts to illustrate how knowing your personality type may help you make a better informed decision about the specialty you are interested in doing. The PowerPoint presentation may be printed for ease of following along with the speaker. Please click on the link button below to show the video.
