What questions will they answer?

Due to the time limit for each speaker, the following questions have been prepared in advance:
  1. How/why did you choose this specialty? Give three main influences.
  2. What one aspect do you like most/least about this specialty?
  3. Describe the schedule of your program, covering the following aspects: Daily hours, call schedule, time off per month.
  4. Is your intern year different from the subsequent years of your residency? If so, in what way?
  5. Where do you feel most of your learning is coming from? (for example, from books, patient encounters, etc.)
  6. Describe a typical working day. Highlight how much reading versus hands-on experience you get and whether or not there are formal teaching sessions for you to attend. Are you expected to give formal classroom teaching sessions to junior students?
  7. How do you balance your career with the rest of your life?
  8. What attributes do you think are most important in anyone considering this specialty?

Suggestions for additional questions you may want to ask the residents if the information is not covered in their presentations:

  1. How important is it to have research experience to obtain a position in your residency program?
  2. How many residents were accepted into your program last year? Were all available places for residents filled?
  3. Briefly outline how the schedule for your residency at MUN compares to other programs in Canada and the USA.
  4. What is call like? What kind of backup is provided?

Who can attend?

Residents Night is open to all medical students interested in attending. I encourage everyone to attend, especially if you are not sure which specialty you would like to enter. It was a great session last year and should be even more informative this year because of the expanded question list. Hopefully, the residents will have a couple of minutes to answer any individual questions you may have. If not, I will take any questions you have and forward them on to the appropriate resident to be answered after the session.

How will this session be evaluated?

There is an evaluation form available for you to give us your comments on Residents Night. Using your feedback we hope to make improvements for next year.

Who can I contact for more information?

A list of contacts will be posted in the near future.
