MUN MedCAREERS Overview

The MUN Faculty of Medicine has adopted MedCAREERS as the formal career-advising program throughout the four years of medical school. This program utilizes a combination of the AAMC Careers in Medicine (CiM) exercises and a series of workshops.  There are 4 phases to this model that roughly correspond to the 4 years of medical school:

Phase 1. Understanding Yourself
The Association of American Medical Colleges has a wonderful web site called Careers in Medicine (http://www.aamc.org/students/cim/) where students can do a series of exercises to help them get to know themselves better.  In order to access this site, MUN medical students will need to receive a password from Evelyn Skinner in the Student Affairs Office.

You can do assessments on your career values, interests, skills, environments factors and practice needs.  You can even fill out a "specialty indecision" questionnaire.  Visit the site to learn a little more about yourself.

MUN Medical School offers a free personality typing test to students who graduate by 2012.  Click on "Personality Type" below to find out the details.  You can also view the PowerPoint and video.

Phase 2. Exploring Options
Phase 3. Choosing a Specialty

Now that you have a better sense of who you are, you are better equipped to make a decision about a specialty. Remember to review all of your assessment results and experiences thus far.

Phase 4. Getting into Residency

The following is a description of the MedCAREERS curriculum during your four years in the medical school.
