MUN MedCAREERS Curriculum
Orientation - Introduction to MUN MedCAREERS
- Financial Health Seminars: Monetary advice on managing debt incurred before medical school and financing medical school (MD Management, recent graduates, residents).
- Peer Advising: First-year students are assigned to a second-year student to assist with the practical needs of adapting to medical school.
- Web Site: A MUN MedCAREERS web site has been designed and will be updated every year.
- Physician Shadowing: First- and second-year students are matched by their top three choices to physicians in St. John's and surrounding areas.
- Specialty Nights: Students arrange Primary Care and Specialty career fairs - two for specialties and another for family practice.
- Residents Night: Discussion with residents in small groups (similar to Specialty Nights) on the specialty they chose including its rewards and disappointments.
- Information Session for New Clerks: A group of third-year students give some helpful information to new clerks about their duties and responsibilities as clerks (chart organization,
addmission orders, and discharge summaries).
- Information Session about "The Match": A group of residents present to first- second- and third-year students about the matching process and how they should start preparing for it.
- Volunteers: Students will be asked to volunteer to fill the positions left vacant by the outgoing students in each Task Group.
Years 1 and 2 - Phase 1
Fall
- Self Assessment: Students are informed about the many online surveys on the AAMC Careers in Medicine (CiM) web site, including values, interests, skills, etc.
- Web Site: A presentation is given to students at Orientation to inform them about the MUN MedCAREERS web site and how it can be used.
- Career Shadowing: as arranged
- Financial Health Seminars: as arranged
Winter
- Personality Types and Specialty Choice: A 2-hour workshop with a presentation on typing and then small group discussions on what it means in terms of which specialty might best suit you.
- Residents Night: as arranged

Spring
- Financial Health Seminars: as arranged

Summer
- Review activities completed during the year for MUN MedCAREERS
Year 2 - Phase 2
The following events are for second-year students only.
Spring
- Clerkship Shadowing: Groups of about 4 second-year students are matched to clerks in St. John's.
- Information Session for New Clerks: as described.
- Information Session about the 'Match': as described
- CV and Personal Statement: The Director of MedCAREERS gives a presentation on preparing resumes and personal statements. Textbooks are on reserve in the library. There is also a presentation on CaRMS preparation by recent graduates.
Year 3 - Phase 3
Fall
- CV and Personal Statement: The Director of MedCAREERS offers to review every students resume and personal letter and make constructive criticism.
Spring
- The CaRMS Matching Process: Presentation by Ms. Sandra Banner
- The NRMP: Information available from Ms. Mary Dray
Year 4 - Phase 4
Fall
- Review Dean's Letters: Students review the letter by email to ensure that all of the information is correct. Check to ensure that all extracurricular information is on file.
- Interviewing Skills Session with Mock Interviews: Arranged by students on their own time.
- CV and Personal Statement: as described
- Personal Interview: One-on-one interviews with students can be arranged to review the application and selection process.
Winter
- Rank Order List: Must be submitted.
- Unmatch Day: When students find out if they are not matched. On-site counselling is available. Co-ordinate NRMP scramble and CaRMS 2nd iteration.
- Match Day: When students find out where they are matched. On-site counselling is available.
- Financial Health Exit Interviews: Interviews with MD Management to plan for residency.
- Exit Interviews with the Dean: Exit interviews are arranged for groups of 10-12 students to talk to the Dean about the strengths and weaknesses of the school and to make recommendations for improvement. The Assistant Dean of Student Affairs also attends and takes notes.
