Adult Health Survey 1995 - Methodology and Descriptive Results

This report provides descriptive results for variables such as: demographic,   socio-economic, health status, health practices, and interaction with the medical services, for Newfoundland and Community Health Boards.

Key Highlights

bulletThere are substantial differences in education, income adequacy and employment status across the community health board regions
bulletYear-round employment is 20 per cent higher in St. John’s compared to other CHBs, while Northern CHB has highest percentage of seasonal and laid-off workers
bulletThere is a very clear association between self-assessed health status and socio-economic variables; respondents with a university degree and high socio-economic status show the highest percentage of excellent/good  health status
bullet31 per cent of the population of the Island are current cigarette smokers; 34 per cent of males and 29 per cent of females
bulletAlmost two out of five respondents are over the recommended weight for their height; this ranges from 33 per cent in St. John’s up to 49 per cent in Northern CHB, and from 25 per cent of females in the 20-34 age group up to 52 per cent of males in the 35-49 age group
bulletOne in 10 have not had their blood pressure measured for at least two years before the interview
