History
The Humanities, Arts & Medicine Database was begun in 2005 as a labour of love for an informal group of medical students and faculty at Memorial University of Newfoundland interested in what literature had to say about the art and science of healing. For about a year we had been pipping off from other duties to meet on certain afternoons to discuss a short story, a poem, song lyrics (and once, an episode of South Park) - anything, really, that touched on the theme.
As we nosed around, we discovered people at other universities had compiled whole databases of this kind of thing (see Links), but that the CanCon - and especially works from Newfoundland and Labrador - was lacking. So, we set about to build on the good work others had begun by compiling a collection of exclusively Canadian works, with a particular emphasis on works from Canada’s eastern edge.
What’s here
This site allows one to search the database by author, author’s residence (either NL or “the rest” of Canada), title, genre, publisher, and/or key word. Each entry is annotated with a short summary and author bio. This is a work in progress; we hope that you will find holes and feel compelled to help us fill them (see below)! In the future, we hope to add visual arts, but for now the database is limited to the printed word.
How we work
This project remains a labour of love, with no full-time staff, and no budget. We rely on volunteers to contribute annotations, and we update the site when we can. Please see our Contribute page for information on how you can get involved.
Acknowledgements
Thanks to Alison Edwards of Memorial University of Newfoundland Faculty of Medicine’s Community Health and Humanities for database support, to the staff of the MUN’s Health Science Information Management Services for handling the website, and to Dr. J.T.H.
