This mat was hooked by a woman from northern Newfoundland for the
Grenfell Industrial. The Industrial was a cottage industry established
by Dr. Wilfred T. Grenfell in the early years of the 20th century to
sell crafts in aid of the people of outport Newfoundland and Labrador.
Dr. Grenfell believed the production – and sale – of such handiwork
would bring money, confidence, and well-being to the communities he
served. Photo Courtesy of Paula Laverty, Silk Stocking Mats: Hooked Mats
of the Grenfell Mission (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2005).
