Healers of Tomorrow Gathering

The Healers of Tomorrow Gathering is a week-long summer camp. It is designed to give Aboriginal students an overview of various health care professions requiring either college or university training. Sessions explore a wide range of professions including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, laboratory technology, paramedicine and dental therapy, just to name a few!
Facilitators will be people who work in these areas. The camp program with its goal to increase knowledge in westernized medicines will be enhanced by sessions about Aboriginal medicines and healing practices lead by elders and healers from various First Nations/Inuit/M├ętis communities in Newfoundland and Labrador. Camp participants will earn a certificate in First Aid.
In addition to the facilitated sessions, students will also participate in hands-on activities such as simulated health care procedures.

  • Who: To qualify students must range in age from Grade IX to first- year university or college. Three seats are reserved for students from Miawpukek First Nation, Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band, Mushuau Innu, Nunatsiavut, NunatuKavut, and Sheshatshiu Innu. Participating students must reside in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.Two seats are also available for Inuit students living in Nunavut. Acceptance to the camp is based on the quality of the application including a reference from an educator.

Step 1: Complete the online Student Application

Setp 2: Be sure to Fax (709) 864-4991 or Scan your Verification of Aboriginal ancestry to 
Carolyn.sturge@med.mun.ca.

Step 3: Teacher Reference: The Reference Form may be completed by a teacher or professor, school administrator or guidance counsellor. Since a signature is required, the form must be printed, signed and Faxed (709) 864-4991 to the attention of Healers of Tomorrow Gathering c/o Dr. Carolyn Sturge Sparkes or scanned to Carolyn.sturge@med.mun.ca.

Cost: Registration, accommodations, meals and travel expenses will be covered Students will be responsible for personal or incidental expenses.
