Storms, Snow Days and Emergencies

Appropriate responses on days of severe weather or other emergencies depend on the student’s geographic location and scheduled responsibilities. A student needs to be guided by official local emergency closure announcements and local conditions. For example, closure of the MUN campus in St. John’s only affects students in St. John’s, NL who are not on call. Clerks in other parts of the province, elsewhere in Canada or at an international site, are not covered by this local announcement. Likewise, storm closures and emergencies causing closure of regular hospital, or clinic activities in Moncton, NB (for example), have no bearing on any other clerks.

On-Call/Shift Duties

Despite a local University closure announcement, clerks are required to report for call and shift duties. Clerks are advised, however, to use discretion and judgment when roads are closed or conditions are so severe as to make travel unduly risky. Personal safety should be considered before undertaking travel. In the event that conditions prevent or delay a clerk from reporting for duty, the clerk must contact the staff person or resident to inform them of their absence or late arrival.

For those Clerks with on-call responsibilities from home, response time to the hospital should be within twenty (20) minutes or as required by the discipline. Stay in the hospital if you cannot comply due to local weather conditions. Your safety is important.

Regular Duties

Clerks who are on regular weekday duty (i.e., not on call or assigned shift work) should not report for clinical duty on official storm or emergency closure days. Clerks in St. John’s, NL, are to be guided by the closure of the Memorial University’s St. John’s campus, or the closure of Metrobus service. Clerks in other locations are to be guided by official local announcements. Clerks who are on regular weekday duty at the time of an official closure announcement, may be excused from duty by notifying the appropriate resident/staff person. Clerks are advised to use discretion and judgment when conditions are so severe, or likely to become so severe, as to make travel unduly risky. Personal safety should be considered before undertaking travel.

In the event that conditions prevent or delay a clerk from reporting for duty, the clerk must contact the staff person or resident to inform them of their absence or late arrival.

MUN Closures (Non-Emergent)

Should MUN cancel lectures by closing campuses for several days due to power outages, for energy saving

measures or other causes were the weather is not severe, clerks are required to report for call/shift and

regular duties at the hospital.
