Administrative History: Newfoundland Medical Association

The Newfoundland Medical Association (NMA) was formed in 1924 by a group of Newfoundland physicians. It is a non-profit organization funded primarily by its members. While it was originally a voluntary association, membership is now required by the province’s Medical Act for all practicing physicians in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. In 1993 the NMA became the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association (NLMA). www.nlma.nf.ca

The Association’s newsletter, The Newfoundland Medical Association Newsletter, was first published in September 1958.  Its title changed to The Newfoundland Medical Journal in 1978, then to NMA Communiqué (unknown date), followed by NLMA Communiqué (1993), and finally in 2000 to Nexus: the official newsletter of the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association.

Articles relating to the history of medicine in the province as well as the development and early days of the medical school covering the period 1963-1979 are included in this virtual exhibit.
