Dr. John R. Martin joined the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1971 as a rheumatologist. He also pursued a career in occupational health and was the Chief Occupational Medical Officer for the Province of Newfoundland from 1983 to 1991. After retirement, Dr. Martin published, in 1998, the book, Leonard Albert Miller, Public Servant.
