There was no damage to the machines and technology in the library computer labs and most of the library¹s collection is undamaged. Offices and service areas were primarily effected by the flood.

Dr. Hawkins passed away in the ICU of the Ottawa General Hospital on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, following complications of acute respiratory illness.

Federal funding expands family medicine residency program

Monte Carlo raises record funds for charity

The 33rd annual Monte Carlo Charity Gala, organized by first and second-year medical students, raised a record $57,000 in 2009. This brings the total amount raised since the charity ball was started in 1977 to over $1 million. The proceeds of this year’s event were distributed April 20 to seven charities with each charity receiving $8,172.

Chronic pain affects close to one in five people in this province costing an estimated $1.5 billion a year – more than heart disease, cancer and AIDS combined. It affects the young and old, healthy and sick. And, with no known cure, it knows no boundaries. Dr. John (Tommy) Tomlinson died at his home on April 1, 2010, aged 84 years. He was the first professor of anatomy at the Faculty of Medicine. Predeceased by his daughter Susan. One of the highlights of the report reviews the current status of bans on smoking in vehicles carrying children. Ownership of hyperbaric equipment transferred to Eastern Health

Memorial University's Faculty of Medicine has transferred ownership of its Hyperbaric Unit to Eastern Health. Under the transfer agreement, the university retains the right to use the specialized equipment in the Hyperbaric Unit for education and research purposes, but Eastern Health will manage the clinical use of the chamber itself. The facility has increasingly been used to treat patients suffering from a variety of conditions and illnesses.

Three researchers in the Faculty of Medicine have been awarded over $2 million in the latest round of funding decisions by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Dr. Thomas Michalak, Canada Research Chair in Viral Hepatitis/ Immunology, will receive $812,265 for his studies on hepadnavirus pathogenicity in a woodchuck model of hepatitis B. Dr. Guang Sun, Genetics, will receive $806,518 for research on finding the endocrine and genetic determinants of obesity in Newfoundland. Dr. Ken Kao, Terry Fox Cancer Research Laboratory, was awarded $462,138 for analysis of the B-cell Lymphoma-9/Pygopus Protein complex in vertebrate body axis development.

Computer model helps identify a genetic cause in colon cancer patients

A new research paper concludes that a model called “MMRpredict” shows the best discriminating ability of four models evaluated to help identify colorectal cancer patients who should be screened for Lynch syndrome, an inherited cancer condition that accounts for about three per cent of all colorectal cancers. Its use could substantially reduce the proportion of colorectal cancer patients who are unnecessarily referred for genetic testing.

A three-year project promoting interprofessional education at Memorial came to an official conclusion June 26 at a reception recognizing participants in the project. Dr. Shelly Birnie-Lefkovitch, chair of the governing council of the Centre for Collaborative Health Professional Education and director of the School of Social Work, said he was struck by how comprehensive the project had been, involving 1,100 students each academic year in various undergraduate interprofessional learning activities. Memorial University Medical graduates placed first in the country in the 2006 Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Exam Part II, written in October after the first year of postgraduate training. This is the second time in six years that Memorial has ranked first of the Canadian medical schools in this exam.

Conference to look at history of sickness and health in remote north

A history of medicine conference on Saturday May 12 will look at the history of sickness and health in northern remote and rural regions. The day’s sessions are open to the public and feature keynote speakers Anne Budgell, CBC journalist, and Nigel Markham, film maker, who will present and discuss their film The Last Days of Okak, which deals with the devastating impact of the 1918 influenza pandemic in Labrador.

New health initiative for aboriginal and rural health education

A major funding announcement concerning health education to rural and Aboriginal Canadians was made April 3. The announcement of funding up to $400,000 towards the project Building Capacity for Aboriginal and Rural Health Education, was made by MP Dick Harris in the Bentley Centre at the University of Northern British Columbia. The partners in this initiative are Memorial University, the University of Northern British Columbia, the University of Saskatchewan, Lakehead University and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. All have mandates that include health programming for and with Aboriginal, northern and rural communities.

Newfoundland family part of study that identifies pain gene

Genetic work carried out in Newfoundland through the Faculty of Medicine’s Discipline of Genetics has contributed to the identification of the gene mutation responsible for a rare condition known as congenital indifference to pain (CIP). Patients with this condition are normal in every way except that they do not feel pain, although they can feel sensations like touch and temperature. With further research this discovery may lead to the development of pain medications which can be used by the general population with fewer side effects than drugs currently available.

Books from Memorial University will soon be traveling to Afghanistan as part of the Books with Wings collaborative project between Canadian medical students and their counterparts in Afghanistan. At Memorial, second-year medical student Dawn Armstrong is the project liaison, and she is already pleased with the donations starting to fill the drop off box in the Health Sciences Library.

Fewer health research projects funded

A funding crunch caused by stagnating levels of support from the federal government, coupled with expansion of research efforts, has resulted in a record low percentage of operating grants funded in the latest round of competition from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Nationally only 16 per cent of new grant applications were funded and at Memorial only nine per cent made the cut with just one grant approved out of the 11 submitted.

The St. John’s Board of Trade annual excellence award for innovation was presented Dec. 6 to Newfound Genomics Inc. The award was for the company’s development of a diagnostic test that predicts the way patients with depressive symptoms respond to drugs. The test is designed to make drugs safer and more effective.

Dr. Ann Colbourne takes leadership role with diabetes association

A new theory of how much kidney function is enough

An article published Nov. 11 in the December issue of the journal Nuclear Medicine Communications proposes a new theory of the need for kidney function. The article relates that researchers working in St. John’s, Toronto and San Diego propose calculating the volume within the body that needs to be cleaned by the kidneys. The first author is Dr. Carl Wesolowski of Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Paul Babyn, of the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, provided the data. Physicist Dr. Richard Puetter, of the University of California, San Diego, also worked on the new estimate of the need for kidney function.

Dr. Sharon K. Buehler, honorary research professor in the division of Community Health and Humanities, received a 2006 Distinguished Service Citation from the Illinois College Alumni Association on June 9. She was one of six alumni chosen to receive this citation in recognition of their inspiration for effective leadership and service to the community, nation and humanity.

Autism research will help local families

Although the causes of autism are still unknown, the medical and scientific community generally agrees that it has a strong genetic basis. Dr. Bridget Fernandez, clinical geneticist and faculty member, is heading up the Newfoundland section of the Autism Genome Project, a multi-centre initiative headed by Dr. Steven Scherer of the University of Toronto and funded by Genome Canada.

Joan Burke, minister of education, was on the St. John's campus June 16 to announce $803,000 in provincial funding towards a research project on human genetic diseases in Atlantic Canada. The Atlantic Medical Genetics and Genomics Initiative (AMGGI) at Memorial University is led by molecular geneticist Dr. Terry-Lynn Young and at Dalhousie University by Dr. Mark Samuels, in partnership with Genome Atlantic.
