Eligibility

Students in Canadian and LCME Accredited U.S. Medical Schools

  • You must be in your penultimate or final year of undergraduate medical education.
  • The proposed elective must be formally approved by the school at which you are enrolled.
  • You are required to complete the immunization record.
  • You must provide confirmation of malpractice insurance.
  • You are required to complete a Visiting Student Evaluation of Elective Period after completing your elective period. You must return this to the Undergraduate Medical Education Office, Memorial University.

Students in Non-Canadian/Non-LCME Accredited U.S. Medical Schools

  • You must be in your final year of undergraduate medical education (the year before your pre-registration/housemanship/residency year) when you start the elective.
  • The proposed elective must be formally approved by the school at which you are enrolled.
  • Applicants from non-LCME accredited medical schools should be aware that the Associate/Assistant Deans for Undergraduate Studies have decided that only a TOTAL of TWELVE (12) weeks of electives in the final two years of study may be performed in Canada.  Of these twelve weeks, Memorial University permits a MAXIMUM of EIGHT (8) weeks that may be performed under the auspices of this medical school. If for example, you already have completed six weeks in Canada, we can only provide you with six additional weeks in your final two years.
  • You are required to complete the immunization record.
  • You must provide confirmation of malpractice insurance.
  • You are required to complete a Visiting Student Evaluation of Elective Period after completing your elective period. You must return this to the Undergraduate Medical Education Office, Memorial University.

DEADLINE DATE

Applications for Visiting Elective placements will be accepted by Memorial University no more than nine (9) months before the beginning of the placement and no less than four (4) months before the beginning of the placement.

Note: An overlap exists in our schedule from mid-September to mid-April. Requests during this time frame will be considered but only following the successful placement of Memorial students.

COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS AND SURGEONS OF NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR

Please be advised that your application for a Visiting Elective placement at Memorial University is a joint application with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador to have your name entered in the CPSNL EDUCATIONAL REGISTER as a medical student.  Once you have been accepted at the Memorial University Faculty of Medicine, you will be required to complete an additional application for the CPSNL registration which also includes a satisfactory police check.  This will be sent to you upon approval of your MUN placement.

Accommodation

St. John's area
All hospitals in the St. John's area do not provide housing for visiting students. Students must arrange and pay for their accommodation.

Outside St. John's
Some of the larger community and rural hospitals, outside St. John's, provide rooms at no cost.  You must contact the hospital directly to discuss this.  Memorial University does not enter into such negotiations.

Immunization

Immunization record information must be supplied, using only the approved Memorial University Immunization Record when applying for an elective at Memorial University.  By selecting the above link to the application form, you will find the approved Immunication Record which must be completed and accompany your application.

Measles and Rubella

In the past several years there have been significant outbreaks of measles, rubella (German measles) and mumps in college and university students. Measles remains a serious disease with the risk of brain damage (encephalitis) and death.

Rubella infection in pregnancy may cause serious fetal damage (congenital rubella syndrome). All women should be immune to rubella before becoming pregnant. Male health care workers must also be immune to prevent exposure of pregnant patients to rubella.
Requirement: either proof of measles and rubella immunity or proof of vaccination with MMRII.

Diptheria, Tetanus, Polio
Requirement: proof of full primary course and boosters within the past 10 years.

Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B virus is one of several viruses that cause hepatitis. Health care workers who will be repeatedly exposed to blood or blood products or to the risk of needle-stick injury will be at risk of infection with hepatitis B.

Requirement: Full course of Hepatitis B vaccine.

TB Skin Test
The University requires the test to have been done within 12 months of the proposed elective date.

Insurance

Malpractice

Memorial University does not provide malpractice coverage for visiting students. You must provide written confirmation that you have malpractice insurance coverage.  Please ensure that when you apply, you provide us with proof that you have malpractice insurance of TWO MILLION DOLLARS per occurrence.

Medical and Dental
Visiting students must arrange for their own medical and dental insurance for the duration of their elective.

Registration

It is the requirement of the Newfoundland Medical Board that all visiting students be registered with the Board. This will be done by the medical school upon approval of your application.

Visa

Please contact the closest Canadian Immigration office for current information and requirements for entry into Canada.

Meals

Students pay for their own meals which are available at reasonable cafeteria prices.

Climate, Clothing, Uniforms and Medical Instruments
Summer: Warm and pleasant with temperature ranging between 14 and 24ºC. Sweater and raincoat is advisable.

Fall: -2 to +14ºC. There is no limit to outdoor activities - ideal for hiking and photography. Warm clothing is advisable particularly at night.

Winter: Extremely variable - ranging from zero to -30ºC. St. John's and the Avalon Peninsula warmer, wetter, and foggier. Warm winter clothing and boots is advisable.

Hospitals require students to be well groomed and to dress in a professional manner. Jeans and tennis shoes are not permitted.

Please bring your own lab coat and medical instruments.

Recreation

Cities such as St. John's, Gander, Corner Brook and Grand Falls-Windsor have arts and culture centers, theatres, indoor sports and fitness centers, golf, curling, nightclubs and other big-town attractions whereas the smaller communities rely on nature to provide recreation. Popular tourist attractions, especially in the rural areas are fishing, hunting, hiking, canoeing, photography, painting, visiting historic sites, camping, berry-picking and picnics. Winter outdoor sports are good in most areas.

Financial Assistance

There is no financial assistance for visiting medical students.

Fees

There is a non-refundable administrative fee of $100 at the time of the application. A certified cheque or money order (Canadian funds ONLY) is to be made payable to Memorial University of Newfoundland. The cheque or money order must accompany the application and must be sent to the Undergraduate Medical Education Office, Faculty of Medicine, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Rm. 2743 - Health Sciences Centre, St. John's, NL A1B 3V6.  Please note for international students, we cannot funds other than Canadian dollars.

Clinical Experience

Your application must include a resume outlining your previous clinical experience.
