The following applies to medical students from Memorial University, other Canadian medical schools and international students (even if they are Canadian citizens).
1) All elective students MUST have approval from the Undergraduate Medical Education office before doing rotations in Newfoundland & Labrador. Without this approval they do not have educational licenses and are not able to take part in clinical care (Memorial University students already hold educational licenses but still need approval from the Undergraduate office).
Supervisors do not need the Undergraduate office’s permission for approval for supervision but if you are contacted by a student and agree to be their supervisor, please advise them to contact the Undergraduate Office regarding procedures and requirements as early as possible before the elective.
Information for Students:
For Clerkship Electives please see here
For Pre-Clerkship Shadowing please see here
2) Elective Students (or anyone for that matter) are not to access patient areas, charts, Meditech etc without a valid photo ID from the respective institution (eg. Eastern Health for the St. John’s institutions). This ID ensures they have been approved by the Undergraduate office and have been approved for an education license.
3) Residents are NOT to accept elective students and are NOT to be the primary supervisor for elective students’ rotations.
Other Information
Students should have their evaluations completed during a face-to-face meeting before the elective is complete.
Evaluations of Medical Students enrolled at Memorial University are documented using the
One 45 system. A username and password will be emailed to you.
Please complete the One 45 form after having discussed the evaluation with the student.
If you have problems accessing the One 45 site please contact the Undergraduate Office.
