Discipline of Surgery

Divisions > Thoracic Surgery

The Division of Thoracic Surgery participates in clinical, educational, administrative and research activities through the Division of Thoracic Surgery, Program of Surgery, Eastern Health and the Discipline of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, MUN.

Clinical services are provided through Eastern Health and patient care on a tertiary care basis is provided through province-wide referral.

Three and one-half days of operating time, two full clinic days, two one-half day endoscopy sessions and clinic participation with the Thoracic Oncology group at the Newfoundland Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation are carried out on a weekly basis and facilitate patient care by the Division of Thoracic Surgery. Care is provided by a client-centred model and an interdisciplinary approach, and cross consultation with respiratory medicine and other services are readily available. The Thoracic Surgery Services are well-supported by nursing and allied health personnel.

There are two thoracic Surgeons providing full-time availability to the Division of Thoracic Surgery through Eastern Health. Each thoracic surgeon is fully credentialed in Thoracic Surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Dr. Gardiner has a geographic full-time appointment with the Faculty of Medicine, and Dr. Mann has a major part-time appointment with the Faculty of Medicine.  Each surgeon dedicates a significant amount of time towards teaching. Dr. Gardiner was, until recently, Clinical Clerkship Coordinator for the Discipline of Surgery, and Dr. Mann supervises Clinical Skills Sessions in surgery for second year medical students during Terms V and VI. There are frequent ambulatory clinic and ward and operating room teaching carried out and, in addition, both thoracic surgeons participate in the regularly scheduled rounds of both the Discipline of Surgery and the Program of Surgery. Each thoracic surgeon is available to assist and participate in clinical research with undergraduate and postgraduate students and several projects are being considered for the future.
