Joan M. G. Crane, MD, MSc, FRCSC



Dr. Crane is a Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, with a cross appointment in Clinical Epidemiology.  She graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1989 and completed residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology through Dalhousie University and Memorial University of Newfoundland, graduating in 1994.  She then went on to complete a Fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1996.  In 1998 she received a M.Sc. in Community Health and Epidemiology from Dalhousie University.

Dr. Crane has over 100 peer reviewed research publications. Her research interests include preterm birth prediction and prevention, obesity in pregnancy, the effects of environmental tobacco smoke in pregnancy and induction of labour. She has received research awards from the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (2014, 2012, 2010, 2008, 2005, 2003, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998, 1992) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (2006, 1997).  In 2004 she received the University President’s Award for Outstanding Research from Memorial University, and in 2010 received the Association of Professionals in Obstetrics and Gynecology (APOG) National Excellence in Research Award.

Dr. Crane has received a number of teaching awards including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology National Faculty Award (2006), the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists District I Outstanding Professor Award (2002), the American Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology National Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Education(1999), and the American Association of Professors in Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence in Teaching Award (1998).    

Dr. Crane has been a member of a number of committees of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC), including SOGC Council (Alternate Chair and Chair of the Atlantic Region), the Maternal Fetal Medicine Committee (past chair), Infectious Diseases Committee, ALARM Committee, and the Obstetrical Content Review Committee; and is the principal author or co-author of a number of SOGC Clinical Practice Guidelines. She has served as the President of the Atlantic Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (2007-2008), and has also served on the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists District I Council as Atlantic Section Vice-Chair and Chair. She served as the Vice-Chair of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Obstetrics and Gynaecology Committee, and was on its Examination Committee. She is currently a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Maternal Fetal Medicine Examination Committee.
