Thousand Thousands Campaign
In 2005, the president of the Medical Graduates Society (MGS), Dr. Wayne Gulliver, issued a challenge to every medical graduate to eventually give $1,000 a year to support the medical school. Speaking at the convocation dinner and dance of the 2005 graduating class, Dr. Gulliver was careful to make clear that this challenge wasn’t an immediate expectation for the new graduates.
“We know that as new graduates you are just starting out. But very soon you will be working and earning and eventually you will be able to give back to your medical school. If every graduate gave $1,000 a year we could raise over one million dollars a year to help build an endowment for the Faculty of Medicine. By the time you come back for your 10-year reunion, you should be able to join the $1,000 challenge and raise a substantial class gift.”
Dr. Gulliver started this challenge by donating his own annual cheque for $1,000 and in June 2006 he donated a second $1,000..
As of July 25, 2006, 82 donations have been made, totaling $36,070.10 from medical alumni to support this campaign.
