About us

Memorial University is the largest university in Atlantic Canada. As the province’s only university, Memorial plays an integral role in the educational and cultural life of Newfoundland and Labrador. Offering diverse undergraduate and graduate programs to almost 16, 000 students, Memorial provides a distinctive and stimulating environment for learning in St. John’s, a very safe, friendly city with great historic charm, a vibrant cultural life, and easy access to a wide range of outdoor activities.

The medical school celebrated its 30th anniversary and accomplishments of 25 years of medical graduates in 1999. We are anchored to our past and navigating to the future with great enthusiasm.

We offer a four-year undergraduate medical program, with the MD degree granted on successful completion. A primary objective of our medical school is to teach medical students to be physicians, and to provide such learning experiences as will inspire all medical graduates of the school to be prepared to practice medicine at the highest standards, serving all individuals and societies in the pursuit of health.

The curriculum, the physical structure, and the administration organization of the school are planned to allow for maximum co-operation between the various basic sciences and clinical disciplines. The first two years of medical studies is called Pre-Clerkship with the teaching of Basic Medical Sciences and the Integrated Study of Disease courses. The last two years of medical studies is called Clerkship where students as clinical clerks take courses that will allow them to alternate through the major disciplines in hospital and community settings throughout affiliated teaching sites in the Provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Our curriculum places particular emphasis on community and rural exposure, and our strength is in primary care. We are a small school, facilitating a personalized learning environment.

We are fully accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) of the Association of Canadian Medical Colleges and the Canadian Medical Association, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) of the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Medical Association. These accreditations mean that the medical school is equivalent in every respect to other medical schools in Canada and the United States.
