Medical students, residents and graduate students are at the heart of Memorial's Faculty of Medicine. Small classes and early patient contact provide an exceptional preparation for a medical career.
A new tradition in the medical school continued this year in September when first-year students received short white coats as a symbol of their entrance into the medical profession and third-year students were presented with long white coats to symbolize their entrance into clerkship. The white coat symbolizes joining the health care team and professional responsibility to patients and to society.
Memorial's medical students are renowned for their ability to raise money for charity. The 26th annual Monte Carlo Charity Gala took place in November, 2002, at the Delta Hotel Ballroom. Over $25,000 was raised and distributed to the Gros Morne Literacy Council, Planned Parenthood, the School Lunch Association, Give to Feel Good (Health Care Corporation of St. John's), the Canadian Hemophilia Society (Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter) and the Parkinson Society.

Another fundraising effort was organized by medical students Sarah Leniham, Jessica Guimond and Jen Goulart. They produced two evening performances of The Vagina Monologues, a play by Eve Ensler designed to raise awareness to stop violence against women. Proceeds of $11,000 were donated to Kirby House, the Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Crisis Line, Sheshashit Innu Women's Group and the Corner Brook Transition House. About 40 volunteers were involved in the cast and crew of The Vagina Monologues, and this year's production featured a new monologue by Aboriginal women.
Memorial offers postgraduate residency programs in anatomical pathology, anesthesia, diagnostic radiology, family medicine, general pathology, general surgery, internal medicine, nephrology, neurology, obstetrics & gynecology, orthopedic surgery, pediatrics and psychiatry. In 2002-03 there were 172 postgraduate medical studies trainees at Memorial.
Two student interest groups started during the year: the family medicine interest group (FMIG) and the complementary and alternative medicine interest group (CAM). FMIG was started out of recognition that fewer students are choosing family medicine residency programs than ever before; the purpose of the group is to highlight the scope and diversity of practice in family medicine and also to advocate for an increased presence of family medicine within the undergraduate curriculum. CAM started toward the end of the year, with the hope of learning more about how complementary and alternative medicine can fit into the western tradition of medicine.
The Medical Students' Society organized a number of initiatives during the year to promote well-being among medical students. Medical student wellness is one of the main priorities identified by the Canadian Federation of Medical Students; at Memorial, medical students organized a Wellness Week in May with display, guest speakers and other activities highlighting different aspects of individual well-being.
