Models of brains decorate desks at the March 11 Brain Storm 2003, held at Holy Heart High School in St. John's
 |
Brain Storm 2003 was held March 11 at Holy Heart High School in St. John's. Seventeen students from four local high schools competed enthusiastically in the live question and answer competition that tests the students' knowledge of the brain. A new activity this year was a Brain Art Competition in which students created original art work about the brain. The design of the first-place art submission was used for the Brain Storm T-shirts and will also be used on the posters for next year's competition. All art submissions were displayed at the Faculty of Medicine, Health Sciences Centre, for three months.
Med Quest is an exciting summer program for students in grades 10-12, open to Newfoundland and Labrador students only. It is a career-oriented program, and during each one-week Med Quest session, students are introduced to health professions such as medicine, nursing, pharmacy, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy. These health careers and special topics are presented through lectures, demonstrations, experiments, guest speakers, research projects, job shadowing, role playing, small group sessions, and tours of health facilities. Application forms are available at high schools or at www.med.mun.ca/medquest/. Ask your principal, guidance counsellor or science teacher. Applicants are selected based on academic achievement, interest in a health career, school recommendation, and extra-curricular activities.
