REACHING OUT...
through team work

Team work is the key to managing HIV/AIDS patients. A multidisciplinary approach not only provides the best model of care for managing a chronic illness like HIV/AIDS, but also helps support the members of the team while caring for people with a potentially devastating illness. The HIV/AIDS team has been the recipient of the Health Care Corporation of St. John's Purple Award to support their outreach activities around the province.

Stephen Oakley, age 38, appreciates the excellent care he receives in managing his illness. First diagnosed in 1991, he has received health care in England, Vancouver, Miami and St. John's. In Newfoundland, he feels particularly grateful to team member nurse Consie Howley who he describes as his "enabler." He doesn't mind talking about his illness, feeling that if his relative good health can provide an example to another person battling HIV/AIDS he has done some good.
The HIV/AIDS team in Newfoundland:
Back L-R: Infectious disease specialists Dr. Chau Nguyen and Dr. Ian Bowmer; clinical epidemiologist and psychotherapist Dr. Gerry Mugford; psychiatrist Dr. Ted Callanan; researcher Dr. Michael Grant.
Front L-R: Nurse co-ordinator Consie Howley, patient Stephen Oakley and clinical pharmacy specialist Dr. Deborah Kelly.
