REACHING OUT...
to the unique people of Newfoundland and Labrador

Dr. Mary-Frances Scully of Memorial's Faculty of Medicine: helping to reduce the risks for people like five-year-old William Mugford who has hemophilia A caused by a rare genetic mutation.
Like many five-year olds, William Mugford loves hockey and digging in the sandbox. He also has a rare genetic mutation that causes mild hemophilia A. This condition - found more often in central Newfoundland than almost anywhere in the world - is difficult to detect but potentially fatal if William is cut or bruised. But thanks to dedicated research at Memorial University's Faculty of Medicine, William's condition was diagnosed early.
Our Faculty of Medicine leads the world in the complex research and support for people with this challenging condition. In 1999 our principal researcher, Dr. Yagang Xie, discovered the genetic mutation. Since then, hemophilia expert Dr. Mary-Frances Scully has led a comprehensive-care team who cross the province twice a year identifying people, like William, who are at risk.
