New Leadership...
| Dr. Karen Mearow is the new associate dean of basic medical sciences in the Faculty of Medicine. She is looking forward to a period of rejuvenation in the division as recruiting efforts are stepped up to replace retiring faculty. Dr. Mearow has been a faculty member at Memorial since 1993. She earned her B.Sc. (honours) and M.Sc. in biology from Brock University, St. Catharines, Ontario and her PhD in medical sciences (neuroscience) at McMaster University, Hamilton. Her research is on the developing and mature nervous system. In the 2003 spring CIHR competition, Dr. Mearow was awarded $285,675 for her neuroscience research on the interactions of growth factor and integrin signaling pathways. Dean Ian Bowmer said Dr. Mearow is an excellent role model, holding a senior administrative position as well as maintaining an active research program. |

| Dr. Michael Murray is taking over as associate dean of the Division of Community Health during a period of major change for the division. Because of a number of retirements, the division is facing a substantial period of faculty renewal. Dr. Murray's main goal is to establish a clear research and training profile for Community Health, building on the many disciplines which fall under community health, from epidemiology through to health social science and policy. He also wants to encourage greater connectedness with a variety of community agencies and one way this is accomplished is through the Health Research Unit. Projects this year involved a study of Autism Spectrum Disorder in collaboration with the Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, and a study of visually impaired native people, in collaboration with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. |

A Memorial medicine graduate (class of 1982), Dr. Parsons previously filled the demanding post of assistant dean for admissions for two terms. She is taking over the Family Medicine Residency Program at a challenging time when the number of applications to family medicine programs has declined right across the country. |
